Citric Acid (monohydrate) is a natural occurring fruit acid. It is a crystalline white powder with a slightly acidic taste and is widely used in various industries, including food, beverage, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. Citric acid monohydrate is produced through fermentation or chemical synthesis and is known for its versatility, safety, and effectiveness.
Citric acid is fully biodegradable and is the most widely used organic acid and pH-control agent. It is widely used in cosmetics to adjust pH in formulations and has mild chelating properties.
Citric acid exists in two forms as anhydrous form and monohydrated form. The difference between anhydrous and monohydrate citric acid is that the anhydrous citric acid has no water of crystallisation whereas the monohydrate citric acid has a water molecule associated with one citric acid molecule.

Chelating effect (neutralizes minerals to enhance activity of antioxidants and preservatives)
Buffering effect (helps to maintain pH between 2.5-6.5 and stabilizes active ingredients)
At high concentration shows typical AHA properties (moisturizing, peeling, smoothing, anti-wrinkle effects).
Can be used in DIY cosmetics and personal care products to delay discolouration and to retain vitamin content.
